In a small medieval farming town governed by rigid social hierarchy and patriarchal custom, a reclusive fisherwoman is ostracised for her persistent fish smell and her outright rejection of institutionalised marriage. Fed up with the ridicule of her stuffy, small-minded neighbours, she commissions a local shoemaker to build her a husband out of wicker, and finds, to everyone's astonishment, that genuine love blossoms between them. As their unconventional romance draws outrage, jealousy and mounting chaos across the town, the film uses eccentric humour to explore envy, true devotion and the limits of social convention.
Review:
A quirky, deeply charming crowd-pleaser buoyed by Olivia Colman's typically brilliant lead turn and a warm, transformative performance from Alexander Skarsgård, finding real heart beneath its absurd premise.
