In postwar Copenhagen, Marie, a young nanny and housemaid, is preparing to marry Christian, the wealthy older widower for whom she works. But Marie guards a shameful secret: during the German occupation, she had an intimate relationship with a soldier. As Denmark celebrates its liberation while conveniently forgetting its own collaborationist history, Marie's past threatens to resurface and destroy her hard-won new status as lady of the house.
Review:
A disciplined, Dreyer-inflected chamber piece that gives voice to a historically silenced group of women, its extreme close-ups and minimalist staging building toward genuine, quietly devastating power.
