Twelve-year-old Mia, an outsider at home and at school, is sent to the mysterious Rotwood Academy along with her scruffy pet rat Quentin after one too many disciplinary incidents. The new school gives her the creeps, and with good reason: her classmates are all real monsters, and Mia must find a way to blend in before anyone discovers she isn't one of them. As suspicious vice-principal Van Vlad, who harbours a deep-seated hatred of humans, closes in on the truth, Mia must team up with her new monster friends to thwart his schemes and prove that monsters really do exist. A decent, well-animated entry by German animation standards that leans on familiar outsider-at-boarding-school beats, its central mismatched friendship carrying the film through some fairly generic plotting.
