Born in 1944 to a prosperous London family, Peter Asher first found fame as half of 1960s pop duo Peter and Gordon, whose hits were written for them by his sister Jane Asher's boyfriend at the time, Paul McCartney. Weaving footage from Asher's own autobiographical cabaret show with rich archival material from 1960s London and 1970s Los Angeles, alongside present-day interviews with Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Carole King, Steve Martin and Eric Idle, the film traces Asher's Zelig-like path from pop stardom to Apple Records executive, and eventually to discovering James Taylor and shaping the sound of the LA folk-rock scene as a celebrated producer and manager.
Review:
A lightly engaging documentary memoir that occasionally indulges its subject's nostalgic mystique too readily, but earns its place through Asher's genuinely remarkable, little-known role at the centre of modern music history.
