In the summer of 1943, as the Allied invasion of France draws near, the British government dispatches six disparate people to a remote Orkney island on a secret, highly unusual mission: to produce morale-boosting propaganda films for troops in the army, navy and air force. The uneasy group includes a war-damaged former film star, a celebrated but exiled German director, an aspiring young actress, a Ministry of Information officer, an ageing costume assistant and her teenage son. As the pressures of the covert shoot mount and the group's own traumas and secrets rise to the surface, the mission becomes a searing exploration of truth, deceit and the moral boundaries a desperate wartime society is willing to cross, and redraw.
Review:
A darker, more distressing hybrid than its premise first suggests, this searing character study finds real dramatic power in its ensemble, anchored by raw, committed performances from Jack Bandeira and Natalie Quarry.
