Trier and regular co-writer Eskil Vogt craft a witty, inventive and tender tale whose tonal shifts through euphoria, heartbreak and hope are beautifully interpreted by the wonderful Reinsve as Julie. Anders Danielsen Lie (the star of previous films in Trier’s trilogy) delivers a characteristically complex performance as Aksel, who bears the brunt of Julie’s unrest and indecision.
