Synopsis:
A Malian mechanic talks on the phone to his mum. A group of royalists celebrate the life of Louis XVI. Kids play outside a tower block. A writer talks about his book. A nurse – the director’s sister – is on her rounds, taking care of the elderly. These are a few of the apparently unrelated protagonists of We – the inhabitants of Parisian neighbourhoods all traversed by the same train. Filmmaker Alice Diop (On Call, 2016) settled along this route when her parents moved to France from Senegal and she astutely interrogates what connects them all beyond the train line. Her inquisitive and generous cinematic essay offers perfectly-framed snapshots of the lives of people we rarely hear about, transforming the ordinary and our way of seeing.
