BIFA-nominated Adams draws talented actors like bees to honey (Alia Shawkat and Dolly Wells are former collaborators), partly through his performance centred process – from an initial idea he and the actors develop a ‘scriptment’, and the story is shaped iteratively during shooting. The result is all loose-limbed aliveness and rich characterisation. You may not like every choice Idris and Patricia make, but they feel very real. And over one messy night, they offer poignant insight into a connection both destructive and creative, loving and yet terrible for them both.
