The members of a research station in Antarctica suddenly find themselves under siege from a shape-shifting alien after discovering the wreckage of a Norwegian station where all the scientists are dead and the buildings destroyed. Realising the alien can impersonate any one of them, the crew members are soon gripped by terror and paranoia as the alien creature moves from body to body, often transmorphing into horrific unearthly forms.
Review:
Not a box-office success on its original run, John Carpenter's remake of
The Thing From Another World eschews the original's low-key shadowy shocks for full-on horror as Rob Bottin's special effects crew come up with some truly startling shock set-pieces as The Thing moves through the cast, most of whom seem to be disposable except Carpenter regular Kurt Russell as the tough and determined MacReady. Some might complain at the downbeat ending but it suits the tone of the film perfectly.
