In 1967, an American woman gives birth to boy while bleeding to death from mysterious wounds. The boy grows up to be a half-human, half-vampire named Blade, who has been trained by fearless vampire killer Whistler to hunt down the befanged bloodsuckers who threaten to take over the city. In fact, the vampires' ambitions are greater than that: a meglomaniacal upstart, Frost, is aiming to overthrow the existing vampire establishment and fulfil vampiric prophecy by taking over the world. Blade sets out to foil their plans with gusto, resulting in a number of bloody encounters. Frost's vampires attack hospital blood specialist Karen; Frost manages to snatch her away and takes her to Whistler for safekeeping. However, the vampires attack again, killing Whistler and capturing Blade and Karen. Frost also continues his assault on those who stand in his way to supreme vampire leadership. However, they resurrect the satanic Blood God and fulfil the prophecy, he needs the blood of a human-vampire hybrid such as Blade, whom he starts to drain of blood. Karen escapes and manages to free Blade, who by now has lost so much of his blood he hasn't the strength to fight on...
Review:
Full-blooded vampire action yarn based on the Marvel comic of the same name; mindless comic book action, it may be, but it rattles along at a terrific speed; there's plenty of gore, some sophisticated high camp from a leather-clad Wesley Snipes in the title role, fine supporting performances from Kris Kristofferson and Stephen Dorff, and some excellent special effects and set designs.
